German automaker Volkswagen says that the Indian market is not viable for electric cars. So, it has no plans to release an EV anytime soon. As per the manufacturer, there is a lack of infrastructure for electric vehicles. There are not enough charging stations in India as compared to its home ground Germany. While India has only 4,000 charging stations, Germany has a whopping 65,000+ public charging stations.

According to Steffen Knapp, Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, currently, in India, the electric car provides an average of 70 to 80 Km/h. So, reputed automakers think the IC-based vehicles provide more comfort, range, and better driving experience.

Recently, Volkswagen had to incur losses due to the high import duty on expensive auto-parts which lead to a rise in the cost of ownership. So, in this case, working hard on an electric vehicle in a non-viable market is not feasible.
However, Nissan and Hyundai have a different story to tell. Recently, Hyundai launched the Kona Electric, which is India’s first electric SUV. Also, Nissan revealed its 2019 all-electric hatchback Leaf at a recent public Livestream of a cricket match. Also, local start-ups have come up with electric bikes which may soon launch in India. Though there are lesser charging points in India, it does have viability for electric vehicles. However, it will definitely take a lot of time for the people to adapt to EV.
