World’s largest electric ferry Ellen has completed its first voyage between two Danish islands. It operated across a strait in southern Denmark. This route lies between the port of Fynshav island and Søby. Starting from September, the ship will operate five to seven times a day in this route.

This electric ferry runs on a 4.3 megawatt-hour battery. It can easily accommodate up to 200 people and 30 cars. This vessel has two motors. It can cover a range of 40km per charge. Danfoss Editron firm is the builder of the motor.

Ellen follows an efficient design. It is 60 meters long and 13 meters wide. It is quite suitable for operating in the seas. Its bridge is made up of aluminum instead of steel. This will lessen the weight and increase the range. Also, the furniture used in the electric ferry is made of recycled paper.

The ferry will set on charge for 20 minutes when it arrives at any dock. This will allow the ship to carry out return trips efficiently.

Swiss Battery maker Leclanche claims sustainable vessel can help overcome the issue of emission. The ship uses a clean propulsion system. This can minimize 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 1.4 tonnes of sulfur dioxide.

In the near future, shipping sectors are going to implement stricter regulations on emission. There is a target to cut down the emission level from 3.5 to 0.5. So, we can hope to see more such electric ferries in the water bodies. There should be more promotion regarding electric water transports.
