The on-road price of various popular electric vehicles in India has come down. This is happening due to the recent GST rate slash by the government. The new GST rate has become effective from the 1st of August. As per the changes, the taxation on the electric vehicle has come down to 5% from 12%.

Automakers are welcoming the decision of the GST council by reducing the price of their EVs. Indias newest all-electric SUV is now available at 23.72 lakhs INR. Its price has come down by 1.6 Lakhs. Tata e-Tigor is also down by Rs 80,000. The latter now costs between 11.58 and 11.92 lakhs in multiple variants.

Sustainable two-wheelers are also facing the product price cut due to the GST rate slash. The price of the scooter Ather 450 has come down by 9,000 INR. Its current price in Bengaluru is 1.13 Lakh INR. In Chennai Ather 450 costs 1.22 Lakhs. Mahindra’s Treo electric 3-wheeler is down by 20,000 INR, now costing around 2.03 lakhs INR.

The price and tax cut will encourage more people to prefer eco-friendly vehicles. However, there is an urgent need for the country to set up more EV charging station. The demand for electric vehicles in India is growing gradually. In the future, EVs may outnumber IC vehicles.

It may be an issue if there are not enough charging stations spread across the nation. we already see long queues in gas stations. Imagine if there are a few charging points and thousands of electric vehicle queuing up to juice themselves up.

Anyways, the future of electric vehicles is bright in India. The government needs to step-up its EV game by setting up multiple charging stations. Then the nation will be on par with other countries that are majorly using electric vehicles.
